GW2s went into the first home game post Christmas following the postponement of the Canterbury fixture looking to build on probably the most significant away victory last week at Old Wills. They faced a Sutton Valence 2s side that had picked up results in recent weeks.
The game started strongly for Valence with the first 10 minutes , most of the possession was from Valence, however no real opportunities were created, and most of the possession was in midfield.
GW slowly grew into the game, with the midfield of Boothy, Steve C and Sumeet Dhinsa taking charge, and chances started to present themselves.
GW were good in the press and some of the pressure led to the defender passing straight to Simmo who squared to Ollie Simpson, who lifted the ball over the giant 6ft 6 goalie into the bottom left corner. It didn't take long for a near repeat, only 2 minutes, for the same to happen and Simmo squaring to Ollie Simpson for a simple goal from a couple of yards.
It proved a great 8 minute spell for GW, with Simmo only a short moment later finding himself in space on the right wing and passing in to the wide open Elliott to pass calmly to the keepers right into the bottom corner. 3 - 0 to GW and at that moment comfortable. Simmo came close with a mishit effort facing away from goal, with the keeper somehow getting the ball onto the near post.
Sutton Valence managed to get a consolation, with the ball breaking to the centre forward off keeper Stapley's pads and they slotted from close range.
3 - 1 HT
Heads were a little down with the goal so close to the break. But Rich Atwood said at the break "I think that's their only shot" and he was right.
The previous week GW controlled the 2nd half and it was the same this week. Numerous chances came and went, with Simmo slipping on a good chance, and Steve Caulfield flying in, between a flick and shot and mishitting wide.
Great work from Cheesy found Elliott near the p-spot where he gathered control back to goal and reverse hit it goalwards – it took a deflection and looped over the keeper for his brace… 4-1.
Another great chance then fell to Cheesy, in a more forward position to normal, connecting well when open in the D but the ball hitting the sideboard.
Finally, the game was well and truly wrapped up with a goal for Dhinsa found by Steve Caulfield at a short corner. 5 - 1 and cruising. The scoring was rounded up with Cheesy squaring for Ollie Simpson to complete his hat trick from close range.
